The biology

A cleaner shrimp works inside a fish's mouth, and the fish waits its turn.

Cleaning stations on a reef are run by small shrimp and wrasse that pick parasites and dead tissue off much larger fish, fish more than capable of eating them in one motion. The larger fish stops, opens its gills and mouth, and holds still. Neither species is absorbed into the other. The shrimp stays a free-living shrimp. The fish stays a free-living fish.

The arrangement has no contract and no lock-in. It survives only because both sides keep finding it worth the trip, visit after visit, for as long as the shrimp keeps being better at the job than the fish is at doing without it.

The translation

The specialist a client returns to without ever building the capability itself.

Not every embedded relationship ends in capture or digestion. Some firms survive AI's repricing of ambient synthesis by staying exactly what they were, small, independent, and repeatedly worth calling for one competence the client has decided is not worth owning.

The risk sits on the other side of the same bargain. The moment the client decides the competence is worth owning, or a cheaper visit becomes available, the invitation ends as quietly as it started. Nothing was ever kept in place to prevent it.
